This project presents a novel and inexpensive method for overhead power line sag monitoring using augmented reality and image recognition. Project presents a new method using smart phone and tablet application to support distribution and transmission line monitoring for ground clearance and other obstacles via citizen science and augmented reality. This method allows a) utility personnel to monitor the overhead line sag amount by using the smartphone application, b) individuals to use their smartphones as mobile sensors and collect data as citizen science and crowdsourcing program to be shared and delivered to utility company. Individuals living in the areas close to power line can collect the information of the power line sag via a smart phone and provide data to inform utility company for possible maintenance to avoid possible power outage. The application will provide an accurate and inexpensive information about the line sag amount and maintenance location to help reduce the unnecessary maintenance costs for the utility.
